What we have learned

Business of Light's BOL'Discussions: "From Nervous to Notable - Interview Hacks that Work" explored how candidates and employers can make the interview process more productive, authentic, and successful. The panel brought perspectives from both sides of the hiring process, emphasizing that an interview should be a two-way conversation where candidates evaluate a potential employer just as much as they are being evaluated.

Preparation emerged as an important part of building confidence. Candidates were encourage to identify their priorities, research firms beyond their websites and social media, connect with current employees, and understand the realities of the work and company culture. Employers, meanwhile, can create stronger interviews by reviewing candidate materials carefully, preparing thoughtful questions, and establishing clear agendas and expectations.

The panel also addressed the challenges of hiring under pressure. Structured interview processes, skill checklists, team involvement, and interim contractors can help firms avoid rushed decisions and improve the likelihood of a strong fit. Salary conversations were another important topic, with panelists encouraging candidates to research market rates, understand total compensation, and ask about growth and promotion opportunities. Negotation was presented as a normal part of the hiring process rather than something to fear.

Legal and ethical considerations were also central. Interviewers must avoid questions involving protected characteristics, while candidates can tactfully redirect inappropriate questions. Clear communication, active listening, timely follow-up, and consistent interview practices help build trust and reduce risk.

Ultimately, the panel reinforced that authenticity matters. Candidates do not need to present a polished facade; genuine curiosity, interests, and enthusiam can help both sides determine whether the relationship is a good long-term fit.

Main Findings

Hiring decisions are stronger when firms balance urgency with a thoughtful, structured process. Clear skill requirements, team involvement, and strong communication can help prevent costly hiring mistakes, while transparent salary conversations set realistic expectations from the start. Interviewers also need training on legal boundaries and consistent evaluation practices to ensure a fair, professional experience for every candidate.
